Product description:

2005 Carlei Estate Chardonnay.

Sergio Carlei owner and winemaker, makes wine from the heart and in a short time this passion has moved him from the family garage to a fully-fledged professional operation.

Sergio believes environmentally responsible viticulture is the best course for winemaking: “Soil to a vine is like blood to a human being. We know that toxins in the blood lead to all sorts of health problems in people and the same holds true for plants, toxic soil leads to improper vine health. Most importantly, cleaner vineyards allow the true flavours in the fruit to be expressed, which results in better-tasting and better balanced wines”.

Carlei Green Vineyards are regional wines made with fruit sourced from a number of vineyard sites. Sergio had chosen areas that deliver both varietal and regional character, while multiple vineyards allow him to craft wines of consistent quality no matter what Mother Nature delivers.

The Yarra Valley is internationally recognised as a leading producer of super premium, cool climate wines and is particularly suited to the chardonnay and pinot noir grapes. The Yarra Valley encompasses a wide range of soil types. The soils in the middle section of the Yarra Valley are ancient, mountain-derived sandy clay loams interspersed with broken sandstone. The other soil type is much younger in origin and is a highly friable, brilliantly coloured red volcanic soil found in both the Upper and Lower Yarra Valley. The Yarra Valley is cool in relation to the rest of Australia's viticultural regions. The region is cooler than Bordeaux but warmer than Burgundy. Elevation varies from 50m - 400m. Rainfall is winter/spring dominant, with the summer relatively cool, dry and can get humid.

The fruit is from low yielding (1.5 tonne/acre), dry grown old vines from Yarra Valley. The grapes were whole bunched pressed, the juice being oxidatively handled and racked with solids to French oak barrels (50% new), where natural ferments took place. Each barrel underwent periodic batonage, with some going through partial Malo-lactic fermentation to add another layer of complexity. The wine was blended and bottled after 14 months in oak.
